About 8x10" graphite on animation paper. Not entirely impressed with this one, as I was copying an image from the computer, my angle was off so when I looked at my drawing vertically it had some issues.. I really need to start drawing on better paper though, as I've noticed I spend a lot of time trying to shade details that don't show up once scanned, or blur out because the paper only allows so much over working.

Though "The Princess and the Frog" may not have been the best choice for a Disney 'comeback' 2d film, I still felt it had a lot of heart, great ideas, and artistic showmanship. I would have assumed something more 'epic' like "The Lion King" would have been chosen to demand more audience attention.

The animation was great, especially the sequences with the Shadow Man, and the shadows. Great backgrounds. Great songs. Some cool characters. For a kid's movie it had a lot of creepy moments, which I personally enjoyed the most, and had similarities to the "Be Prepared" sequence in "The Lion King", and Ursula's Grotto in "The Little Mermaid". I loved that the movie wasn't afraid to explore different styles of animation, and thought Tiana's fantasy sequence was incredible. I'm not sure if it's just me or not, but I noticed the 3d elements a little too much, and didn't like it. I wasn't sure if it was intentional stylistically or just me picking up on things most people might not notice. Though the movie did have moments to laugh at, and moments to cry about, I'm still left wishing there was more to it... Feels like something's missing compared to Disney's best. That being said, I can't wait to see more 2d films in the future, and hope this film helped in reviving interest in the almost lost art of traditional animation.

My two best shots from the Blink-182 show on Tuesday, July 28th, 2009 at GM Place in Vancouver, BC. I lined up around noon in hopes of getting to the front of the stage, and to the merchandise before it sold out. I got a picture with Mark outside his bus before the show, and he signed my ticket! Managed to stay at the front the whole time, fighting off other fans; came out with bruises, but it was all worth it!!! ♥

Recently, I remembered a book at my Grannie and Papa's house, titled "The Art of Walt Disney: From Mickey Mouse to the Magic Kingdoms" (Christopher Finch, 1975), that I used to look through all the time as a kid. At the time I was only interested in Disney for the characters, the cartoons, and the photos of Disneyland. Today, my Grannie said I could have the book. Excited, and overwhelmed with a feeling of nostalgia, I looked through it, discovering layouts, background paintings, storyboard examples; along with a history of Disney, the shorts, the parks, and the features created up until the year the book was published. Many things that pertain much more to me now, which is interesting to reflect on. I never thought I would be where I am now, in a place where I could appreciate the art, effort, and craftsmanship that went into making the films I grew up with. Upon reading, I came across a concluding statement:

"...Just how much of a future there is for animated features depends on the extent to which younger artists can be attracted to a craft which demands a long and exacting apprenticeship"...

Finch's words read very true. Classical animation became a 'dying' art form, and it saddened me immensely to think that the very core of animation would be overcome by a computer. Although it seemed that by progressing to 3D, and utilizing the technology around us would make for an advantage, it became all too easy, and boundaries are never pushed when there is no longer a challenge presented. As much as I wanted to believe 2D would come back, I didn't know if it would... And if it did, when? The original art of classical was too easily dismissed for a new computer animation fad; were we forgetting that without classical, 3D would've never been invented?

Needless to say, that when word of "The Princess and the Frog" spread, it created an uproar of excitement and relief, that finally classical animation, with the help of Disney, would have a chance to thrive again. Coincidentally, today, the day I rediscovered this book, I also discovered the new trailer for "The Princess and the Frog."

The Vancouver Sun has written an article about Pixar opening a studio in Vancouver, BC. It would be a 20,000 sqft facility, with around 75-100 employees, to produce Pixar's short features, while the main features stay in Emeryville. “There’s a huge, very robust, and mature talent pool in Vancouver that we’d like to tap into and continue to develop...” Read the full article here.

Another music video I worked on, "The Same Things," for the band Bend Sinister was just posted to YouTube. I had the job of animating a stickman running throughout a library.... Sounds simple, I know, but I hadn't animated at all since school in '06. The look that the director wanted was achieved though, so I guess I did alright, and I learned a lot in the process. I hand animated it on animation paper (a couple hundred sheets), scanned it into the computer, and edited/resized every frame for compositing purposes. There was an exception with one scene, whereby I had to animate flip book style in a chapter book. View the video.

I was at the arcade in Metrotown, and spotted this weird prize machine... Not sure what it was, or how it worked, but I'm drawn to bright lights and colours, especially bright green. I noticed the toys inside were Monsters, Inc. and had to take a picture. It just looked so cool, and who wouldn't be amused by Sully's off-model face?

Blink-182 has announced that they have reunited after four years on hiatus, which makes me feel super happy, yet super weirded out at the same time. I've finally accepted the fact that they went away, and were "replaced" with Angels & Airwaves and +44, and now this news comes out. Tom has stated that AVA will continue on as a band, but I wonder how it will all work out considering he'll be devoting his time and effort into two bands instead of one. All I hope, is that whatever happens, good music is created, and integrity is kept.

Coraline is easily one of the best, and most artistic movies of the last decade. It's amazing how much detail, time, and expertise went into the film, and in my opinion it far exceeds Corpse Bride's story, and is comparable with Nightmare Before Christmas, if not better in it's own way. It's animated play on real life, mixed with it's magical 'other' world, draws the viewer in and leaves one wanting more... And who could resist watching an almost two hour stop motion animated film, let alone in 3D! I got goosebumps throughout the entire thing, and my only dislike is that it wasn't longer. If only I could take a set home with me; I could stare at the details, colours, and textures for hours. Even the clothing is amazing, as it is all hand-knit and incredibly tiny. Henry Selick and Neil Gaiman make for a fantastic team, and my only wish is that more films like this are created in the future.

I dreamed of this moment for years... I FINALLY got to meet Tom Delonge :D !!!!! Went to the Angels & Airwaves show at GM Place tonight, and had plans to find the tour bus after the show, and hopefully meet the band. I've decided to post this, for fun, but on Wednesday I 'talked' to Tom Delonge. I'm a member of modlife.com, and the band will have webcam chats with the fans.. And if you're lucky, they'll only choose a few people at a time to talk to them. So, I was at work, randomly decided to check the website, and Tom was on camera. I turned to a coworker to explain how it works, etc, when I hear "Steeeeen... steeen..... steen182... steeeeeen...are you there?" in my headphones. In a moment of panic, I realize that out of all the people in the chat-room, Tom had only selected me to ask a question. He said he was going to pick one random person, for one question, and go figure, the time I wasn't paying attention, I was chosen. I said hi, mentioned I was at work, and I asked his opinion on the particle accelerator... And he exclaimed that it was a 'fucking good question', and then quickly explained what it was (for people who didn't know), before going offline. Doesn't seem too exciting... but trust me it was <3
